Wanted: Front Cover For A 429 Cadillac Engine

Postby EZ » Sun Dec 09, 2012 2:59 pm

Over on the '65-'66 Cadillac board we are discussing the weak link of our engines..............the aluminum front cover that as you know is part of the oil pump.
When it gets worn the oil pressure falls. The bad news is that Cadillac made changes in the cover EVERY YEAR from '64 - '67!!!! So you can't just find another front cover you have to find the SAME YEAR front cover as your engine which makes it even harder to find.

So first, I need a front cover in good condition for a 1966 cadillac 429 engine for myself.

Second, we have a guy in our group that would like to find front covers for 64-67 that are NOT in good shape so he can look at the differences
and also try to come up with a way to repair the covers to help people in the future. Obviously the price on these covers need to reflect their
condition as a non useable part. Last time I checked none of us are millionaires so money is tight.

Please contact me if you can help. ezrider800@catt.com

Thanks!

Just thought I'd bump this to the top. Maybe somebody has an old 429 engine they aren't going to use or has a friend, or knows of a junk yard...............thanks!

I suppose you saw this one on eBay?

What does a guy look for in quality? How do you know if it good or bad?

I look for pitting on the water pump side. It's got to be able to seal up and not leak. The oil pump needs to not have
a bunch of scoring in the cylinder. The front cover doesn't need to be cracked. And the bolt holes need to be round
not oblong where somebody has had problems getting bolts out of the engine and buggered up the front cover in the process.
Obvious stuiff like that.

So the one on eBay had a ton of pitting around the water pump and still went for $175. I do have one for a 1967 but it is still on the engine. I finally got the dampner off yesterday and it was the hardest one I ever pulled. I have a very good puller and broke the five grade bolts, had to go and buy grade 8 to get it to hold. Still took a lot of hammering on the center to make it budge and it complained the whole way.

Front Cover For A 429 Cadillac Engine

Postby Bruce Roe » Mon Mar 11, 2013 9:02 pm

I always wondered, if ideally a "universal" cover could be created to replace them all? Or
perhaps replace most of them, with minor machining?

And the oil pump, ought to bolt on a 68-81 unit. And an HEI. Bruce Roe

Having had to replace a '66 cover and dreading having to find another some day,(which fortunately I never did) I always wondered if there was some way to "metal spray" the aluminum to build up the area behind the water pump that erodes as well as the inside of the oil pump casing and then re-machine them out to spec. I believe differences in the oil passages between the years preclude a "universal" cover, but perhaps that could be thought out with some inginuity. Problem is it seems there never would be enough demand to make the tooling pay off

I suppose then, the next option is fit a 472. And rebuild the trans into a BOP case.
That would certainly solve a lot of issues, including the HEI option and ability to
handle poor quality unleaded gas.

Cad should have left the distributor in back; the Olds engine avoided these issues
and others like getting primed. Bruce Roe

There was that one for $175 and another one for $200. I didn't buy either as I felt the guys were trying to price gouge the buyer.
I found another guy who had one from a 1966 429 engine (same as mine) and paid him $65.00. That's more reasonable.

If anything happens to this 429 that I have I would not build another one. I'd drop
a 472/500 in the car in a heartbeat. But my motor was free (it came in the car)
and it only has about 60,000 miles on it so all it needs was freshening up. Plus
I'm putting a new cam in it to see how it'll run. But yeah, if this one grenades
I'm dropping in a 472/500.
